Spanking Art: Secret Identity

In yet another example of real life being stranger than fiction, the hardcover book Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-creator Joe Shuster reveals how a giant of American popular culture became involved with a series of underground BDSM publications called Nights of Horror.

Filled with illustrated tales of spanking, bondage, voyeurism and other taboo activities, these low-budget magazines were accused of inciting youth violence and eventually became the focus of a U.S. Supreme Court obscenity case.

It’s all very bizarre, which makes Secret Identity a great read. The book is also filled with dozens of classic BDSM illustrations, reproduced from the few surviving copies of Nights of Horror.

Nu-West Spanking Comics

For the sake of posterity and historical perspective, here’s some pre-Internet spanking nostalgia for you. (Click on the thumbnails to see larger images.)

The time was the glorious 1980s, when my computer was a Commodore 64, the compact disc was the cutting-edge media format challenging the vinyl LP record, and the country’s biggest fear was the threat of thermonuclear war with the mighty Soviet Union.

Out in California, a pioneering spanking content company named Nu-West/Leda was producing gritty, realistic spanking videos and publications, including a series of adult comics “for the connoisseur of corporal punishment and home discipline.”

The Nu-West Comics were primarily 16-page, black-and-white publications with cardstock covers, and many featured illustrations from talented spanking artist Stephanie Burke, whose work has always seemed particularly authentic to me.

Back before the days of free blogging and Internet image searches, these comics were quite unique. A CP enthusiast might find the occasional adult spanking drawing in a book or magazine, but complete illustrated stories were a rarity.

I asked Ed Lee over at Nu-West/Leda if I could post a few of these old comic covers for you. Here are a couple of historical factoids he shared with me:

“Some of the comics have stories behind them and some don’t. The House in Virginia was based on a real situation except the real house was in Michigan. Many of the comics were drawn by an artist who did a lot of work for Marvel.”

I believe that some of these publications may still be available for purchase on the Nu-West/Leda website, in case you’d like a piece of classic spanking memorabilia for your personal collection.

Marital Advice from Jay Em

A few years ago I commissioned several original CP illustrations from spanking artist Jay Em, who hailed from a legendary party city down south. (Way, way down south.)

When the shipping envelope finally arrived in my mailbox, I found that Jay had slipped an extra drawing into the packet — his way of saying “thanks for the business,” I guess.

Jay’s bonus panel illustrates a challenge that many spankos face: Getting a vanilla spouse to fulfill or even simply accept his or her life partner’s needs.

I’ve met a number of spanky people over the years who felt forced to seek out secret play partners, because their spouses could not or would not deal with their fetish. I think that’s tragic all the way around.

On the other hand, I’ve also met vanilla folks who attend spanking parties with an open mind, and even participate in the festivities, because they want their partners to be happy.  I believe that’s what sex-advice columnist Dan Savage refers to as “good, giving and game.”

So, a tip of the hat to all the GGG vanillas out there. We know you don’t fully understand our obsession, but we greatly appreciate the acceptance.

Space Amazon Spanks!

I think it’s curious that for decades science fiction writers, artists and filmmakers have giddily presented all kinds of semi-edgy subject matter that would have been strictly verboten outside of the genre, at least up until recently.

Let’s take the Space Amazons or their Earthly cousins, the Barbarian Women, as an example.

Think of all the trashy pulp novels and B movies that have featured these strong female archetypes, and all the alternative lifestyle actvities they apparently participate in:

Bisexuality, bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, catfighting, muscle fetishes, leather, edge play — not to mention good, old-fashioned nudity and wild sex.

When these activities are portrayed in a fantasy setting — on a distant planet or an exotic island lost in time — apparently they’re safe for the public to view as titillating entertainment.

But portray those same acts in a serious book or film about real-world characters and their desires, and that still makes most people uncomfortable.

Interesting.

Welcome to the New Pad

Colorado Spankers has officially moved to better digs. Make yourself comfortable while I fire up the margarita mixer.

When I launched the first Colorado Spankers site more than seven years ago, it was quite a project for a guy who still doesn’t know HTML. I had to find an adult web hosting company, teach myself FrontPage (now defunct), build a website and fill it with enough spanking content to make it a useful resource. People must have liked it though, because over a million spankos visited over the years. Probably more, but my primitive hit counters kept failing, so the actual total is lost to history.

These days a popular spanking blog can rack up a million uniques in single a year, but back then I felt it was a significant milestone. Even more gratifying, many visitors emailed me to say ”Thanks for the site. I thought I was the only one who had these fantasies.” So whatever else I do or don’t do in my life, at least I lit the way for some fellow travelers. I hope it helped.

The old Colorado Spankers site was something in its day, but it became less relevant after the blog revolution. I recently compared the site to an obsolete space station,  hurtling crew-less through cyberspace in an ever-increasing state of disrepair.

So to celebrate the new decade, Colorado Spankers now has a new home and a new web address. Some relics from the first site have been carried over, some have been given to friends and some have been retired. For instance, the old tagline A Beginner’s Guide to OTK Fun doesn’t really apply anymore, as this site will be a bit more personal and less informational than the last. Today’s spankophiles have more online and real-world resources than ever before anyway. They don’t need me telling them where to buy a paddle.

Still, I’ll try to make an interesting contribution to the spanking blogosphere. Stop by when you feel like it, and don’t be shy about commenting or sending me an email. It’s always nice to hear from fellow deviants.

Cheers,

Cody
